In contemporary Korean music society, there are two distinct types of vocal genres and both have the same Sino-Korean name of Kagok, which means lyric song. Historically, Kagok is a set of traditional Korean classical lyric songs. It was created in the sixteenth century and was the most popular form of song enjoyed by the literati of Korea. This Song recital presents the “other” Kagok genre, encompasses songs written since the 1930s which use Western diatonic styles. Most Koreans recognize this latter genre as Kagok because Korean music has become markedly Westernized. These songs presents Korean traditional melody but expressed in a Western composition style.
